The CfA Decadal Plan
For more than 50 years, the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) has been a recognized global leader in astronomy research, instrumentation and outreach. Drawing on our strengths that span theory, laboratory astrophysics, observations, and in-house engineering, we present in this Decadal Plan an integrated strategy that will sustain and build on that leadership and maximize the scientific and societal impact of our work in the decade ahead.
A Message from the Director
As one of the foremost astronomy and astrophysics institutes in the world, our success is rooted in the remarkable breadth of our science, the depth of our engineering prowess, our commitment to advancing knowledge, and sharing our knowledge with the global community. As we chart a course to 2036, we celebrate our legacy and set an ambitious agenda for the decade ahead.
The CfA Decadal Plan 2026–2036 is built around five overarching scientific themes that address some of the most fundamental mysteries of the cosmos. Progress in each of these areas will be driven by next-generation observatories, new applications of artificial intelligence and data science, and an integrated approach to observations, theory, and research.
Yet, sustained leadership in discovery relies upon the people and culture that define the CfA. In the coming decade, we are committed to cultivating our dynamic and collaborative environment and empowering all CfA members to achieve their greatest potential. We will invest in modernizing our facilities, enhancing professional development, and further breaking down disciplinary boundaries to foster creativity and innovation. We also recognize our profound responsibility to share the excitement and impact of discovery with society.
I invite you to read our Decadal Plan and learn how the CfA is uniquely positioned to lead the field over the next decade. This document serves as a roadmap and a commitment. We will lead scientific inquiry, steward knowledge, transform our understanding of the universe, and ensure that the spirit of discovery endures for the coming decade and for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Lisa Kewley, Ph.D.
